French Immersion Excursion (paddling)
Event Date: October 6th, 2015
- Do you wish you had more fun opportunities to speak French?
- Do you want to meet other francophones?
- Do you not have enough time or money to attend a full-length immersion program out of the state or country?
- Do you love exploring Louisiana?
The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is organizing short-term French immersion activities great for adults, college students, teens and kids who want to speak French outside the classroom. These experiences are easy ways to practice your language skills, meet other francophones and explore unique parts of Louisiana.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6 (NOTE: We're also hosting this same event Saturday, Oct. 10)
Join us during the 2015 Grand Réveil Acadien for a morning of paddling on Lake Martin. We’ll glide beneath the Spanish moss-covered canopy of cypress trees and learn about the flora and fauna of the lake from a native Louisiana-French-speaking guide. And if you want to continue speaking in French after the paddle excursion is complete, join us for lunch in town at a local restaurant (location TBA).
All levels are welcome. The one rule is that participants speak only in French for the duration of the immersion activity. Native and advanced speakers will enjoy meeting other francophones and learning about the unique flora, fauna and culture of Louisiana. Beginners will learn a few key phrases so they can still ask questions and expand their knowledge. All registered participants will also receive a vocabulary sheet with words that may come in handy throughout the day.
10 a.m. to noon
Meet at Lake Martin in Breaux Bridge for kayaking/canoeing with Bayou Teche Experience and a native Louisiana French-speaking guide.
PRICE: $25.00 per person (includes two-person canoe or kayak, paddles and life jackets)
REGISTRATION: Advance registration is required. Email Ashley Herrick at firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a spot. Payment must be made to Bayou Teche Experience by cash (bring exact amount) or check on the day of the event.
AGE: All ages are welcome, but kids 12 and younger must participate with a parent.
WEATHER: In the event of bad weather, this activity will be rescheduled to a later date.
