Atchafalaya National Heritage Area 2022 Grants Awarded
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area announce the 2022 Atchafalaya National Heritage Area Competitive Grant awardees. The 18 projects represent 10 of the 14 ANHA parishes and will advance the mission of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area through cultural, recreational or natural resource preservation and enhancement.
“We are grateful to help our basin communities interpret the culture of this special place for our residents, visitors, and people all around the world. The goal of the ANHA grant program is the further building of an understanding of the area’s key stories, strengthening the sense of place, supporting a healthier ecosystem, and expanding economic opportunities for the Atchafalaya Basin. Through their stories we can learn of the evolution of this rich blend of cultures, traditions, and lifeways that have created this special place known as the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area," said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
The 2022 grant cycle saw an increase in applications and parish participation, as well as a broader diversity in project type. A grant review panel comprised of art, culture and economic development representatives selected projects to fund based on project feasibility, sustainability and creativity. Through funding from the National Park Service, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area will grant $164,720.00 in funds to the 18 projects.
The ANHA 2022 Competitive Grant Awardees are:
- Friends of Bayou Lafourche, Napoleonville Multi-Trail Connection, $20,000

The Friends of Bayou Lafourche will create a multi-use trailhead to connect Bayou Lafourche to the surrounding community of Napoleonville.

Treasures of Pointe Coupee 2023 will be a six-day exhibit of two- and three-dimensional art submitted by local and regional artists at the Poydras Center in New Roads.

This natural flowing water project will prevent bacteria build up in the housing tubs, thus allowing the hatchlings to live in natural water before being released into the wild.

The intent of the Pierre Part Belle River Museum is to present and preserve the Cajun French culture, which has grown and evolved for over three centuries in the Atchafalaya Basin. Phase 2 will provide a conceptual design, including costs, goals for fundraising, and a visual presentation, that will enable the board to make key strategic decisions.

- LSU Department of Entomology, Improve Management of Giant Salvinia in the Atchafalaya, $15,000

The Giant Salvinia Biocontrol Program hopes to restore an unused greenhouse facility at the LSU Aquaculture Research Station. This greenhouse will allow researchers to maintain viable overwinter populations of the salvinia weevil. By being able to offer salvinia weevils earlier in the year, agencies and landowners can start to control the giant salvinia before the plant can establish itself in the Atchafalaya Basin's waterways each spring.

- Avoyelles Tourism Commission, Avoyelles Bicycle Repair Stations, $3,200

Avoyelles Parish is situated along Highway 1, which is a popular destination for bicyclists who are interested in seeing Louisiana's landscape through a unique point of view. The bicycle stations will provide a small service for these bicyclists who have decided to visit and encourage them to economically engage with communities located in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.

- True Friends Society of Lafayette, Maison Creole de Freetown Virtual Heritage Tour and Signage, $3,500

The Freetown Black Heritage trail is both a virtual tour and a 1.5 mile walk through the heart of Lafayette's Historically registered neighborhood, Freetown. The trail will showcase residences, places of interest and community buildings associated with this Black community that thrived before, during, and after the American Civil War.

ACA aims to strengthen the region’s creative economy by increasing access to programs for Atchafalaya-based creators. The ACA will target communities within their eight-parish service region which also fall within ANHA boundaries, including St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Iberia parishes. This project will leverage ACA’s existing expertise and increase access to their high-quality programs to four additional parishes within the ANHA region.

The Atakapas-Ishak Trail will be a destination for travelers much like the Tammany Trace, Erie Canal Trail, Katy Trail and other parks and paths are. People will be able to safely cycle, run or walk without interference from vehicles around the Lafayette airport near Vermilionville.

The Rougarou Fest is a free, family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of the Atchafalaya basin. Since 2012, it has showcased live music, cultural activities, children's games, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, a costume contest, live demonstrations, and so much more.

Funds will be used to begin the first stage of the plan: the “Discovery” portion.

Héritier means ‘heir,’ and with this project CODOFIL wants to revive this role in south Louisiana’s media landscape. Regular segments will focus on French and Creole revival and engagement with younger generations.

Completion of infrastructure projects will allow the St. Luc Campus to be ADA compliant and meet the Fire Marshall requirements. The organization will then be allowed to offer French classes in hospitality in the fall and host events such as a monthly French Table and Genealogy class.

- Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center, Free People of Color in St. Landry Parish Exhibit, $7,500

Parish: St. Landry

Free People of Color (FPOC) in St. Landry Parish shaped the culture, economy and other aspects of St. Landry Parish pre-Civil War. This population was socially and politically caught in between: they were denied the freedom of whites, and feared enslavement--the fate of so many Blacks. The museum will install a permanent exhibit in the Opelousas Museum that interprets the social impact of Free People of Color in this region.

The ANHA and the National Park Service are proud to provide funding to local champions working to create powerful connections between people, culture and the environment. These grantees are instrumental in ensuring that what makes South Louisiana authentic and unique will be appreciated and passed on for generations to come.
In addition to the ANHA Competitive Grant, the ANHA Small Fund Grants provide funding for smaller projects related to cultural continuity, community engagement, and natural and recreational resources improvements. The 2022 Small Fund Grantees are:

Les 18 projets représentent 10 des 14 paroisses de l'ANHA et feront progresser la mission de la région du patrimoine national d'Atchafalaya grâce à la préservation et l'amélioration des ressources culturelles, récréatives ou naturelles.
« Nous sommes reconnaissants d'aider nos communautés du bassin à interpréter la culture de cet endroit spécial pour nos résidents, visiteurs et gens du monde entier. L'objectif du programme de subventions de l'ANHA est de mieux établir la compréhension des histoires clés de la région, de renforcer le sentiment d'appartenance, de soutenir un écosystème plus sain et d'élargir les opportunités économiques pour le bassin d'Atchafalaya. Grâce à leurs histoires, nous pouvons apprendre l'évolution de ce riche mélange de cultures, de traditions et de styles de vie qui ont créé cet endroit spécial connu sous le nom de Région du patrimoine national d'Atchafalaya », a déclaré le lieutenant-gouverneur Billy Nungesser.
Le cycle de subventions 2022 a vu une augmentation des demandes et de la participation des paroisses, ainsi qu'une diversité plus large dans les types de projets. - Les Amis du Bayou Lafourche vont créer un point de départ multi-usage pour connecter le Bayou Lafourche à la communauté autour de Napoléonville.
- Le Conseil des arts de la Pointe-Coupée (Arts Council of Pointe Coupee), Trésors de la Pointe-Coupée, 1 500$
- Paroisse: Pointe-Coupée
- Pendant six jours, les Trésors de la Pointe-Coupée 2023 va être une exposition d’art en deux et trois dimensions soumis par les artistes locaux et régionaux au Centre Poydras à Chemin Neuf.
- La Fondation louisianaise de la tortue-cocodril (Louisiana Alligator Snapping Turtle Foundation), Projet d’élevage de tortue-cocodril pour la conservation, 15 000$
- Paroisse: Ascension
- Ce projet d’eau courante naturelle va empêcher l’accumulation de bactéries dans les bailles de rétention, permettant ainsi aux petits de vivre dans l’eau naturelle avant d’être lâchés dans la nature.
- Le Musée Pierre Part Belle Rivière (Pierre Part Belle River Museum), Phase 2 du Musée Pierre Part Belle Rivière, 10 000$

- L’intention du Musée Pierre Part Belle Rivière est de présenter et de préserver la culture cadienne-française qui s’est développée et a évolué pendant plus de trois siècles dans le bassin de l’Atchafalaya. La Phase 2 va donner une idée conceptuelle, avec les coûts, les buts d’une collecte de fonds et une présentation visuelle, qui vont permettre au conseil de prendre des décisions stratégiques clés.
- Département d’entomologie de LSU (LSU Department of Entomology), Amélioration de la gestion de la Salvinia géante dans l’Atchafalaya, 15 000$
- Paroisse: Bâton-Rouge-Est
- Le programme de biocontrôle de la Salvinia géante espère restaurer une installation de serre inutilisée à la station de recherche aquacole LSU. Cette serre va permettre aux chercheurs de maintenir des populations hivernales viables du charançon salvinia. En étant en mesure d'offrir des charançons de la salvinia plus tôt dans l'année, les agences et les propriétaires fonciers peuvent commencer à contrôler la salvinia géante avant que la plante ne puisse s'établir dans les voies navigables du bassin d'Atchafalaya chaque printemps.

- La piste du patrimoine des Noirs de Freetown est à la fois une visite virtuelle et une promenade d'1,5 mile à travers le cœur d’un voisinage de Lafayette historiquement reconnu, Freetown. La piste va mettre en évidence les résidences, les lieux d’intérêt et les bâtisses communautaires associés avec la communauté noire qui prospérait avant, pendant et après la Guerre de Sécession.

- Paroisse: Saint-Landry
- Imaginez des journées remplies de leçons sur la musique, la nature, la danse, la langue, le manger et les peuples de Louisiane. Ça c’est le Camp Balfa. Pendant 2022-23, Louisiana Folk Roots (LFR) va faire revivre son programme fondateur, le Camp Balfa pour la musique cadienne et créole, afin d’engager les passionnés de la culture louisianaise du monde entier.
- Le Centre des arts d’Acadiana (Acadiana Center for the Arts), Soutien aux créateurs de l’Atchafalaya, 10 000$
- Paroisse: Lafayette / Multiples
- L’ACA vise à renforcer l'économie créative de la région en augmentant l'accès aux programmes pour les créateurs basés autour de l’Atchafalaya. L'ACA va se concentrer sur les communautés au sein de sa zone de service de huit paroisses qui se trouvent également dans les limites de l'ANHA, y compris les paroisses de Saint-Landry, Saint-Martin, Sainte-Marie et Ibérie. Ce projet va profiter de l'expertise existante de l'ACA et augmenter l'accès à ses programmes de haute qualité à quatre paroisses supplémentaires dans la région de l'ANHA.

- Le Grand Réveil Acadien (GRA) est un événement multi-paroissial organisé pendant neuf jours célébrant l'impact durable du peuple Acadien/Cadien dans l'ANHA sur l'histoire et la culture de la Louisiane. Le GRA encourage les gens du monde entier à chérir les styles de vie acadiens et cadiens à travers des souvenirs partagés, la langue française, la nourriture, la musique et l'histoire.
- Centre de découverte des zones humides du sud de la Louisiane (South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center), Rougarou Fest, 10 000$
- Paroisse: Terrebonne
- Le Rougarou Fest est un festival gratuit et familial avec une touche de frissons qui célèbre le riche folklore existant le long des bayous du bassin d'Atchafalaya. Depuis 2012, il a présenté de la musique en direct, des activités culturelles, des jeux pour enfants, de la nourriture cadienne, la parade Krewe Ga Rou, un concours de costumes, des démonstrations en direct et bien plus encore.
- Université de Louisiane à Lafayette (University of Louisiana at Lafayette), Planification stratégique du Centre d'études sur la Louisiane, 7 500$
- Paroisse: Lafayette
- Le Centre d’études louisianaises se consacre à la recherche, la diffusion, la promotion et la préservation des cultures et de l'histoire de la Louisiane. Compte tenu de la visibilité accrue et des opportunités à venir de dialoguer avec le public, une aide extérieure est nécessaire pour élaborer un plan stratégique pour l'avenir du Centre d’études louisianaises. Les fonds serviront à lancer la première étape du plan : la partie « Découverte ».
- CODOFIL, Le projet Héritier de KRVS, 9 000$
- Paroisse: Lafayette
- Avec le projet Héritier, CODOFIL veut faire revivre ce rôle dans le paysage médiatique du sud de la Louisiane. Le financement d'Héritier va permettre au programme de relancer énergiquement avec un animateur francophone de la Louisiane qui non seulement enregistrera en direct mais produira également des émissions qui vont au-delà de la musique. Des segments réguliers se concentreront sur le renouveau du français et du créole et sur l'engagement avec les jeunes générations.
- Campus culturel et d’immersion française de Saint-Luc, Projet d’infrastructure critique du campus d’immersion française, 11 520$
- Paroisse: Saint-Landry
- L'achèvement des projets d'infrastructure va permettre au campus Saint-Luc d'être conforme à la loi ADA et de répondre aux exigences du Maréchal des pompiers. L'organisation sera alors autorisée à offrir des cours de français en hôtellerie à l'automne et à organiser des événements tels qu'une table française et des cours mensuels de généalogie.
- Musée et centre d’interprétation des Opélousas (Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center), Exposition des Gens de couleur libres de la paroisse Saint-Landry, 7 500$
- Paroisse: Saint-Landry
- Les gens de couleur libres de la paroisse Saint-Landry ont façonné la culture, l'économie et d'autres aspects de la paroisse Saint-Landry avant la Guerre de Sécession. Cette population était socialement et politiquement coincée entre les deux : elle se voyait refuser la liberté des Blancs et craignait l'esclavage - le sort de tant de Noirs. Le musée va installer une exposition permanente dans le musée des Opélousas qui interprète l'impact social des gens de couleur libres dans cette région.
L'ANHA et le Service national des parcs sont fiers de fournir un financement aux champions locaux qui travaillent à créer des liens puissants entre les gens, la culture et l'environnement. Ces gagnants contribuent à garantir que ce qui rend le sud de la Louisiane authentique et unique sera apprécié et transmis aux générations à venir.
